Bali, the land of artistic culture, tourism places, natural site, beaches, civilizations, and strong religion. it strives to give you the most unique and finest travel experience here. But do you ever heard about Nusa Penida? Most people rarely know about this place, it still located in Bali district especially in southeast of Bali island. So, i'll telling you about my travel experience there. Let's read the complete story of my journey in Nusa Penida island, Bali, Indonesia.
My journey began at college holiday especially in Ramadhan month 2016, so by that time I was doing fasting. But, it didn't make a reason not to traveling. Previously I've already pack my stuff and booked ticket. I took flight from Surabaya to Denpasar in the morning. Around 10 AM I landed in Ngurah Rai airport, Denpasar. Ian friend of mine already waiting there and picked me up, and then we're heading to Padang Bai Harbour crossed over to Nusa Penida island. It took 1 hour to the harbour. at 11.30 AM we arrived in Padang Bai Harbour.
We bought the ticket to Nusa Penida, the cost is Rp15.000 for each person, and Rp30.000 for each motorbike. It took 1,5 hour to reach Nusa Penida Island. This kind of ferry was average, not big enough but it had a rooftop. We decided to explore this ferry to lose our boredom.
At 2 PM we finally reached Nusa Penida, it was still shiny at that time. After that we're heading to Kelingking beach. kelingking is indonesian word means little finger. why it's called kelingking beach? local people here said there's a cliff that the formation just like little finger in kelingking beach, hahaha. We're so curious about that beach look like. The trip takes 1 hour from the penida harbour to kelingking beach. after that we arrived in this beach, the entering ticket is Rp5000 , but my friend Ian could speak balinese and he make some conversation with them so we didn't pay to them, hahahaha lucky us! and then we walked into the beach and we just stoned, seeing this pretty damn scenery of this place!
If you ever see a korean drama named Descendents of the sun, you must be realised this place. it similar with the shipwreck beach in Urk district at that drama. but the real place located in Navagio, Greece. As always, korean fever hahaha :p
the sun already lagging into west side, time showing us that the night will come. We decided to find the cheapest homestay in Nusa Penida. after riding for 1 hour we find a traditional homestay located in the center of penida. and it was the cheapest one, finally we check in to Khrisna Homestay. the cost was Rp100.000/night. time indicating us at 18.30 that means Maghrib time reverberate. We decided looking for culinary near homestay for rescinding our fasting. we got some fried rice and ice tea there the package cost is Rp15.000. After we filled our stomach, we heading back into homestay to take a rest.
We woke up at 3.30 AM because we must starting our fasting with sahur. We decided to cook instant noodle there and make some hot tea. The sun is already hitting strong in the morning and I'm ready to go Atuh beach. It quite far that takes 2 hours riding from the homestay. We planned to go in the early morning at 6 AM. after 2.5 hours riding we arrived into Atuh district, but we don't finding any direction into the beach, so we asking to the local people and they said that the beach wasn't far enough but the road that we will passing is broken and not good enough. after 30 minutes riding we arrived into this Atuh beach, The view is amazing and it paid us after 3 hours riding. the entering ticket is Rp7000.
The beach is so quite, it just two of us in this beach. by that time we met foreign lady in there, so we make conversation with her. Her name was Christine garvina she's scottish from scotland. Well from stranger became a new friend ! we started talking a lot of things at that time about her experiences travel around the world you know the typical basic conversation when we met the kind of travelers like this. She said that she was solo traveling and want to see more about the beauty of Indonesia. I asked her about why she choosing Nusa penida, she told us that in Nusa penida is quiet enough, the nature scenery was mesmerized. different with bali island now is very crowded.
At 10 AM we heading to the hills near atuh beach, local people here called the hill Karang Atuh hill. it takes 15 minutes by walking from the beach. We must walk into the stone stairs that the height reach 50 meters. we walking just slowly because we're in fasting condition. we must saving our stamina in order make our body not too tired. the sun shining very bright, I feel so thirsty at that time, but I have strong intention so we didn't break our fasting until the top of the hill. after 30 minutes walking we arrived in to the top, Karang Atuh hill !!
There's a small hinduism temple on the top of the hill, and local people here using the top of cape temple for the place to throwing ashes of dead bodies, that most hinduism ritual in bali when someone died the corpse will be burn in Ngaben ritual, and then the ashes will be thrown into the sea.
After we're satisfied exploring this hill, we're going to next destination. we took our motorbike in atuh beach and going to Pasih Uug and Angel's Billabong. It took 1 hour riding from atuh to Sakti district that pasih uug and angel's billabong located. The good vibe and the chilled atmosphere is really easy to catch up on the way to there, the weather was very nice, shiny accompanied by some white cloud. then we arrived after 1 hour riding, the entering cost was Rp5000 each person and Rp2000 for parking the motorbike. We walk off from park area to Pasih Uug, it just took 5 minutes walk. finally we arrived there, we're totally exciting seeing the unique kind of beach that the formation just like a big hole and there's a blue ocean water come from the short cave that connecting the hole beach and the sea, such a wonderful creature!
the time showing us about 4 PM and we considered just took some photo in pasih uug, and then we went to next destination Angel's Billabong. The location is beside pasih uug, just took 10 minutes walking then we arrived then. Angel's billabong was a river that forming a bay contains salt water because the position heading up into the sea. we decided to going down and swimming there and relaxing our body caused tired on a day trip. but FYI the waves here come suddenly, it could make you dragged out into the sea and drowning you. So, be careful if you want to swim here.
Fresh salt water combining with nice weather made us feeling so relieved. afterward we walk out from this place and we heading back to the homestay to break our fasting and take a rest. On the way to the park area we met with group of cows, then we take a photo with them lol
This is the last day we stay in Penida, but we still have some destination didn't visited yet. There were Crystal Bay, Temeling Springs, and Guyangan Water Cliff. But looking for the schedule of the ferry that heading to Bali at the noon so we only choosing one destination, it was crystal bay because it the nearest one from the homestay and the harbour. It only takes 30 minutes there. Crystal bay was a beach that local people using for fisherman activities. but the scenery was totally precious. Quiet prevail and the only sounds heard was the waves of the bay and swing leaves of the palm trees.
We planned to going snorkling here but the time wasn't enough, we must catch up the ferry at 11 AM, so we decided to heading back into harbour and leave this island. Well, i think i've enjoyed enough in this island and prepare back to Bali to continued my exploration to Uluwatu and Ubud. Anyway I’m happy i did this trip it was totally worth it to had my bacpacking travel to this beautiful island. hope can back soon :)
