We were so lucky to had this nice interview with our friend, Afrizal Aidil Putera (@afrizalputera), who is originally from Samarinda City, Easr Borneo, Indonesia. Let’s learn
Putera (@afrizalputera) has been an active instagram user since three years ago. He is also a desinger for several indonesian local scene brands. His main photography aesthetics is ‘daily life perspective’. It’s more about how he see his daily life, where he could freely showing his daily activities in a creative photography version of his own.
How do you find inspiration?
I find my inspiration from people i follow in instagram. Most of them really inspire me to create creative photos.
How did you learn about Instagram?
It was at first from @chubbygraham’s account. I found his account from my twitter timeline. There was a pair of glasses as an object that was placed on certain spot in his picture. I found that this picture was really cool, and not a lot of people knew the purpose of the picture. From this instagram picture, i started to know about instagram.
When was the first picture you’ve ever taken?
I first knew photoraphy in late 2010. At that time, DSLR Cameras was so popular. I took my first picture with my friend’s camera (EOS 1000D).
Do you shoot with your iPhone for all of the pictures you post on your instagram account? If yes, is it important that your feed remain iPhone only? If no, what else do you shoot with?
It depends on the lighting and the spot of my object. If my iphone’s camera sensor is not good enough because the object’s condition, then i will use DSLR Camera.
Which software/apps do you use to edit your pictures?
I used several apps. If i can give you advice, do not use only one apps. You can try various apps such as Faded, VSCOcam, Phonto, Mextures, Snapseed, Afterlight, Fotor, Retouch, and many more. Every app has different feature and filter that can be experimented with your picture and tone.
Is there an Instagram photography tip that you would like to share with us?
For me, one important thing for all instagramers is that you have to enjoy in taking all your picture. Do not pursue to be a Suggested User. For me, being a suggested user is only a reward from your creative pictures.
What do you do for a living? How does it relate to instagram (if at all) and if it doesn’t relate, how do you balance both?

Do you have places that you like to continuously go back and shoot?
Yes, i do. One of them is Desa Budaya Pampang. It is located around Siring River, Samarinda. It has the Dayak Asli tribe.
What’s the best story you could share related to your photo ‘sessions’?
I called it fog Sunday. It was when i went to camp at Tanjung Harapan beach, located 30-40km from Balikpapan. There was a pine forest near the beach. When we went to the forest in the morning, it was so amazing! The morning fog at the pine forest made me so speechless.
You seem to enjoy shooting several minimalize and white types of photography? Why do you choose that?
Yes, minimal photography seems to drive my brain to be more sensitive whit many spots, whethe it’s a home custom spot or on the table.
Camera VS Mobile. Which one do you prefer?
I actually prefer mobile. It is easy to share directly, we don’t have to transfer the picture and stuff.
Which hashtag do you use more on Instagram?
For hashtags, it depends on the category of a photo that I want to post, #journesia is absolutely one of them.
what do you think about the concept of journesia?
Journesia is really inspirative. It shows us how beautiful our indonesia is, by feauturing so many talented photographer.
